Project Overview
Code for the City (conceptual project at General Assembly)
“Code for the City” is based on Code for San Jose, a non-profit organization located in the Silicon Valley. Volunteers from varying occupational backgrounds meet during ‘civic hack nights’ where they aim to solve challenges in their local communities together. My group and I at General Assembly were tasked with redesigning the current website to help attract a new, more diverse volunteer pool.

The Problem
Researchers, project managers, accountants, and many others are encouraged to join, but are deterred by terms like “hack” and “code” which are typically only associated with software engineers. Additionally, volunteers prefer to know exactly what to expect during hack nights and want to see the actual impact and progress they make on certain projects.
The Opportunity
By clarifying Code for the City’s overall mission objective and highlighting the different skill sets needed, we can ease any hesitation non-tech volunteers may have towards contributing and provide a clear outline of what to expect when working on projects.
FINAL DELIVERABLE
By clarifying the content of CFTC, we hope to:
Intrigue volunteers with new skill sets.
Ensure everyone knows what to expect.
Show contributors their impact on projects.
